We treat a tolerance figure the way we treat a claimed weight: as a promise that can be checked. The MLB Multi-Color T-Shirt Collection lists a 1–2 cm measurement range, so we ordered two units of SKU 7718818098 in different colorways and sizes and put the size table beside the tape measure on the bench.
What arrived
Two short-sleeve crewnecks, 100% cotton per the neck label, listed at $7.91 against an original $8.45 and marked in stock. We took 910 black in size L and 957 white in size XL. Both came folded in plain poly bags with no hangtag, no care card and no printed size sticker; the only care text in the parcel was the printed neck label, because the listing itself still carries no care instructions. The agent weight field on the order read 0.00 g, so the shipping weight is a blank we could not fill.
Colorways are the loud part of this listing — more than thirty black-and-white codes, including the 969 Year of the Horse option in both colors — but the part a buyer cannot see is the shape. That is what we measured.
Four flat measurements, chart beside bench
Priya measured each tee flat on the bench, garment smoothed but not stretched, then compared every figure with the size table printed on the listing.
| Flat measurement | Listed, size L | Measured, 910 black L | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chest, pit to pit | 54 cm | 54.4 cm | +0.4 cm |
| Shoulder, seam to seam | 48 cm | 47.2 cm | −0.8 cm |
| Sleeve, shoulder to hem | 21 cm | 21.0 cm | 0 cm |
| Body length, HPS to hem | 72 cm | 70.6 cm | −1.4 cm |
| Flat measurement | Listed, size XL | Measured, 957 white XL | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chest, pit to pit | 56 cm | 56.8 cm | +0.8 cm |
| Shoulder, seam to seam | 50 cm | 49.0 cm | −1.0 cm |
| Sleeve, shoulder to hem | 22 cm | 22.0 cm | 0 cm |
| Body length, HPS to hem | 74 cm | 72.6 cm | −1.4 cm |
The pattern is consistent across both units: chest reads very slightly wide, shoulder and sleeve length are close, and body length is the one figure that runs short on both. Both units still fell inside the stated 1–2 cm band, which is the useful finding. The 1.4 cm length shortfall is not a defect, but it does mean the tee sits higher on the hip than the chart implies, and a buyer near the top of a size should not count on the extra length.
Stitch density at two seams
We count stitches over 2.5 cm at two places per garment. At the side seam both units ran 12 stitches, evenly tensioned, with a flat four-thread overlock and no puckering under the arm. At the shoulder seam the black unit ran 11 and the white 10, both acceptable for a mid-weight knit but visibly the lighter of the two constructions. The hem is a double-needle cover stitch about 6 mm deep with no skipped stitches. The white unit had two loose thread tails at the left side seam that trimmed off cleanly.
The print sits flat to the touch with a soft hand-feel rather than a thick plastisol film. We found a small registration offset of roughly 2 mm on the 957 graphic where one edge of the lettering meets the geometric block — visible at arm's length only when the shirt is held against a window.
One 30 °C wash, then the tape measure again
The listing says nothing about washing, so we followed the neck label: cold machine wash, no tumble dry. After one cycle and line drying, the black L body length moved from 70.6 to 70.2 cm and the chest from 54.4 to 54.2 cm; the white XL went from 72.6 to 72.1 cm in length. All of that sits inside our own half-centimetre remeasurement noise. No print cracking, no hem twist, no collar ripple.
That result does not close the shrinkage question on the brand. The one care complaint in our files describes an MLB flagship top shrinking badly after a single wash, on a different garment and with the wash temperature unstated. A cold wash and line drying is the cautious path; a hot dryer is the risk we did not take.
What we could not verify
The listing credits the cotton with an antibacterial function and names no test standard, treated fabric or laboratory, so we can only report it as a catalog claim. Sizing guidance for the brand also conflicts in the evidence: one buyer-facing source calls MLB apparel loose enough that people size down, while a buyer of Nike-made MLB tees needed XL for a normal L. Our two units behaved like a standard loose-fit tee, not a generous one. Anyone between sizes should take the chest figure from the chart, add the 2 cm tolerance, and compare that against a tee they already own rather than trusting a size label.
How we scored it
Four out of five. The specification held where it could be checked — measurements inside tolerance, consistent seam density, no measurable movement after a cold wash — at a price that makes a second colorway easy. The missing care text, the unverifiable antibacterial line and the one-figure-short body length keep it off the top mark.
